[FOOD] Food Rules: Your Dietary Dos and Don'ts

"When drinking tea, just drink tea." I find this Zen teaching useful, given my inclination toward information absorption in the morning, when I'm also trying to eat breakfast, get the dog out, start the fire and organize my day, I believe that it's so much better for our bodies when we are present to our food. Perhaps a bit of mindfulness goes a long way first thing in the morning. (Of course, some time ago, I came across a humorous anecdote about a hapless Zen student whose teacher taught him this aphorism and then was discovered by the same student, drinking tea and reading the paper. When confronted, the teacher said, "When drinking tea and reading the paper, just drink tea and read the paper!") - MICHELLE POIROT http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/10/11/magazine/20091011-foodrules.html

Planting trees and managing soils to sequester carbon By  Lester R. Brown Courtesy of  Earth Policy Institute Jan. 8, 2009 As of 2007, the shrinking forests in the tropical regions were releasing 2.2 billion tons of carbon per year. Meanwhile, expanding forests in the temperate regions were absorbing 0.7 billion tons of carbon annually. On balance, a net of some 1.5 billion tons of carbon were being released into the atmosphere each year, contributing to global warming. The tropical deforestation in Asia is driven primarily by the fast-growing demand for timber. In Latin America, by contrast, it is the growing demand for soybeans and beef that is deforesting the Amazon. In Africa, it is mostly the gathering of fuelwood and the clearing of new land for agriculture as existing cropland is degraded and abandoned. Two countries, Indonesia and Brazil, account for more than half of all deforestation. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, also high on the list, is a failing stat...
